This hiking trail offers amazing views and provides a reasonable hiking challenge due to the steep terrain. The Machame route is therefore more suitable for more adventurous and experienced climbers. Detailed itinerary:

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Elevation: 1640 m to 2850 m

Hiking time: 5 to 7 hours

Distance: 11 km

Habitat: Rainforest

Pre-trekking briefing will be done at your hotel in Moshi and after, embark on a short drive to Machame gate for about 45 minutes. This road trip offers amazing views of Machame village along the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro Volcano. At the park gate, we start our trek via the rainforest navigating up to the ridge until Machame Camp.

The hike involves trekking via muddy and slippery paths, hence a need for gaiters and trekking poles. From here proceed up to Machame Camp to have a leisurely dinner, relaxation, and overnight stay.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Elevation: 2850 m to 3810 m

Hiking time: 4 to 6 hours

Distance: 5 km

Habitat: Heath

After breakfast, embark on a trek through the rainforest and continue ascending through the path crossing the valley on a steep rocky ridge, take the westward direction to a river gorge till you get to Shira 2 camp which takes about 4 to 6 hours with an experienced guide.

Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 3810 m to 4630 m (Shira 2 to Lava tower), 4630 m to 3976m (Lava tower to Barranco camp)

Hiking time: 4 to 5 hours (Shira 2 to Lava tower), 2 to 3 hours (Lava tower to Barranco camp)

Distance: 10 km

Habitat: Alpine desert

We hike towards the East up a ridge and then proceed to the Lava Tower also known as Shark’s Tooth and then descend until Barranco Camp through a beautiful scenic forest at an elevation of about 3962 m. The essence of spending time at a high elevation gives you a high chance of acclimatization although you begin and end the day at a similar altitude.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3976 m to 3995 m

Hiking time: 4 to 5 hours

Distance: 5 km

Habitat: Alpine desert

After breakfast, depart from your campsite through a steep ridge till you get to the Barranco Wall and navigate via the Karanga Valley. Today, you will have a delicious lunch at the campsite, and thereafter, get some rest and proceed with acclimatization as you trek up the scree slopes towards the Southern ice field. Get back to Karanga Campsite for dinner and a night stay. The trekking distance covered will be 5 km on this day.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 3995 m to 4673 m

Hiking time: 4 to 5 hours

Distance: 4 km

Habitat: Alpine desert

Barafu Camp

Leave Karanga Camp after breakfast you will hike to the Barafu Camp, about a 4 km trek. The trek takes you on a spectacular journey featuring the alpine desert but requires some strength as you take on the elevation at the wall. Proceed up to Barafu camp for relaxation and great views of the surroundings.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp 

Elevation: 4673 m to 5895 m to 3068 m

Hiking time: 7 to 8 hours (Barafu camp to Uhuru peak), 5 to 6 hours (Uhuru peak to Mweka camp)

Distance: 5 km (Barafu camp to Uhuru peak), 12 km (Uhuru peak to Mweka camp)

Habitat: Arctic and Rainforest

At about midnight after a delicious cup of tea/coffee, we leave the camp fully prepared and begin the ascent to the summit. This day’s trek is the most physically and mentally challenging yet the most rewarding. The hike up to Stella Point offers spectacular views of the sun rising over Mawenzi Peak. Finally, we reach Uhuru Peak at 5895 meters above sea level – this is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and in the whole of Africa. At the Crater rim, catch a glimpse of magnificent surroundings, take pictures, and later begin our descent to the Barafu campsite for a lunch break. Continue descending till you reach Mweka campsite for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Elevation: 3068 m to 1640 m

Hiking time: 3 to 4 hours

Distance: 10 km

Habitat: Alpine desert

On this last day, you will descend to Mweka Gate where you collect your summit certificates and proceed for about an hour through Mweka village where the vehicle will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel in Moshi town or to the drop-off point of your preference which will bring the tour to an end.
