Mara enjoys unrivalled fame for its abundant wildlife and the annual dramatic wildebeests’ migration episodes culminating in spectacular and adventurous crossings of crocodile infested Mara River.
Lake Nakuru and Masai Mara are understandably popular wildlife destinations. Often referred to as the bird watcher’s paradise, Lake Nakuru National Park, nestled in the heart of the Great Rift Valley, is amazingly set on the peripheries of Nakuru Town – a metropolis of close to one million inhabitants. It is also home to the endangered black and white rhinos. Largely wooded with predominantly gigantic yellow backed acacia trees and bush lands, Lake Nakuru National Park is a stark contrast to the open rolling plains of the Masai Mara National Reserves.
The Maasai Mara Game Reserve is widely considered to be Africa’s greatest wildlife reserves. Its 1500 square km of open plains, woodlands and riverine forest supports large concentrations of wild animals and birds. This is the heartland of the Maasai Community, a people that have for generations remained faithfully loyal to their unique culture. Travellers and holiday makers have the opportunity to encounter and interact with the Maasai people and learn about communities enduring cultural practices. The Maasai are a staunchly independent people who still value tradition and ritual as an integral part of their everyday lives. They regard themselves not just as residents of this area but that they are as much a part of the life of the land as the land is part of their lives. Traditionally, the Maasai rarely hunt and living alongside wildlife in harmony is an important part of their beliefs. Lions and Wildebeest play an important a role in their cultural beliefs as their own herds of cattle.
Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Nakuru
arly departure from Nairobi for a 3 hour drive to Lake Nakuru National Park. Spend the rest of the day on game viewing drives in the park. This is a small but scenic park with abundant wildlife including flamingos and rhinos. Others include lions, leopards, hyenas, among other carnivores, and an array of antelopes such as impalas, gazelles, waterbucks, dik diks etc. The park also hosts a sizeable population of the Rothschild’s giraffe, a rare species originally of Western Kenya’s ecosystem. The major highlight of the park includes the amazing flamingos’ population attracted by the abundant supply of the green algae in the soda rich lake which supplies nourishment for the birds. Overnight at Maili Saba Camp (outside the park).
Maili Saba Camp is a mid-range eco-camp located in a tranquil environment within the vicinity of the Menengai Crater. The camp was established as one of Ujima Foundation’s income generating ventures. Ujima Foundation is a community project that supports the education of orphaned children.
Day 2: Nakuru to Masai Mara
After an early morning breakfast, we set off at 7:00am for a six-hour drive on the floors and over the western escarpments of the great Rift valley to the Masai Mara to arrive in time for lunch at Ol Moran Tented Camp. You will have the early afternoon for leisure before proceeding to the Masai Mara game reserve for your anticipated date with the gem of African wilderness. A game viewing drive through the rolling hills and the open plains of the Eastern end of the park in search of your most favoured game animals until sunset. Return to your camp late in the evening for dinner.
Day 3: Masai Mara Game Reserve
Enjoy full day of game drives in the Mara; time spent exploring the stunning Masai Mara scenery and in search of the ‘The Big Five’ – Lions, Leopards, Elephants, Buffalos and Rhinos. Mara teems with many other species of wild animals as well. They include Giraffes, Zebras, Hippos, Baboons, Wildebeests, Warthog, Gazelles, crocodiles and hundreds of species of birds. During the months of July to October, the Masai Mara plays host to one of the most spectacular dramas anywhere in the wild. The great wildebeest migration takes the centre stage. Over one million wildebeests and zebras make the northward journey from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara amidst dangers and hazards from predators and the swollen Mara River infested with crocodiles. Optional evening visit to a Masai Village to learn the dance and culture of the Masai community
Day 4: Masai Mara – Nairobi
You will proceed for an early morning game drive as from 6.30pm for an opportunity to catch up with the activity of the nocturnal and semi nocturnal animals which are rarely active during the heat of the day. Return to your camp for breakfast and preparation for departure and transfer back to Nairobi in time to arrive by late afternoon.
